“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” …is usually the response from businesses still reliant on ISDN solutions. In all honesty who can blame them? ISDN can be ultra-reliable and deliver great voice quality after all.

But as you may be aware, in 2015 BT announced that they will be switching off the PSTN and ISDN networks by 2025. With this, BT will no longer accept any new orders or amendments to services applicable to any ISDN products as of 2020.

So what does this mean for your business?

Once the switch-off has taken place, customers will be migrated to a single IP core network using SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) trunks, which will ultimately replace all legacy network and platforms. We are here to help you switch now in plenty of time… before it runs out.

Why are they being phased out?

Unfortunately these systems are now rapidly becoming out of date, as are the associated maintenance and running costs. Despite having been updated over the years, these lines are still essentially the same in setup and design as the original phone lines of the 1880’s! With all other fields of technology advancing at light speed around us, it makes sense that our telecoms systems are also updated.

What is SIP trunking?

Simply put, they are telephone lines on your broadband, making calls over your IP connection rather than over traditional physical phone lines (ISDN). Find out more information on SIP and its benefits here.

While the 2025 switch off seems a long way off, businesses will no longer be able to buy or upgrade to a system that utilises PSTN and ISDN lines from 2020 – which is under two years away – and will be considered a legacy product.

Here’s the great news. Swapping to SIP couldn’t be easier. Better yet, SIP trunks offer a much more flexible and lower cost alternative to ISDN for inbound and outbound voice calls for your business.

Many organisations have already made the beneficial switch to SIP, so get in touch with us to learn more about SIP technology and its advantages!
